The Walkway Above- Aman

Here’s something I found quite interesting and relevant:

The above photos are of ‘The High Line’ in New York, a railway track converted into a pedestrian path way. It shows how it has been created to be very welcoming and spacious; seating allows pedestrians to sit and socialise, while admiring the surroundings. The space is also elevated from the hustle and bustle of the street, creating a hierarchy from the street. Also the tracks of the train have not been totally removed, creating this feeling of motion. I think this is a great idea as the architect has created a space solely built from human mobility. It is used by mainly locals who sometimes treat it as the destination, rather than a transitory place. It also fits within its context well concealing its actual use from below.

This links to the core belief’s of Cedric Price’s practice who believed that through the correct use of new technology/ design, the public could have unprecedented control over their environment. This could result in a building which could be responsive to visitors’ needs and the many activities intended to take place there, and I think that the above example is a step closer towards this ideal, as it has many uses, and can cater for many activities.
